Dem Bones are precious.

Like a strand of pearls, our bones connect by fine but strong threads (our soft tissues).

Degenerative bone disease doesn’t sound as scary as a hip fracture.

The Numbers Are Serious

First, among Americans, 65 or older, half have arthritis diagnoses. Second, two in three people who are obese will likely develop arthritis in one or both knees. Third, osteoporosis and osteopenia affect up to 200,000,000 people worldwide.
Moreover, one in four people may develop painful hip arthritis in their lifetime.

For example, annual spinal fractures in the United States exceed 700,000, with more than 300,000 potentially life-threatening hip fractures. Plus, 50 percent of those with arthritis suffer from another co-morbid disease, most typically cardiovascular disease or diabetes.

By 2030, an estimated 67 million Americans ages 18 years or older are projected to have doctor-diagnosed arthritis (not limited to osteoarthritis).

“Bone mineral density can be rebuilt with appropriate yoga techniques,” says Dr. Loren Fishman in Deborah's book, "From the Boxing Ring to the Ashram." And, “Yoga and arthritis were made for each other,” says  Fishman.

We tend to think it’s normal for our bones to bear the brunt of time. Pretty much all of us have seen the effects of advanced years on the bones. Perhaps a dowager’s hump, or grandpa who is no longer as tall as he used to be. God forbid an elderly person slips and falls. Brittle joints can’t handle what used to be normal knocks or blows.

Hip and knee replacements cost Medicare billions of dollars each year. With our aging America, poor diet, and lifestyle, the costs to our society will skyrocket if we are not proactive in protecting our bone health. Therefore, it’s never too early to start caring for your bone health.

To respond to these figures, certified yoga therapist, Deborah Charnes, created the Dem Bones informational series. This module is geared toward nourishing flexibility in the joints and bone density to help ward off or keep osteoarthritis and osteoporosis at bay.

Plus, Deborah's 90-minute on-demand offering incorporates information sharing along with movement therapy to improve and protect against arthritis and bone density loss. As a Continuing Education Provider (YACEP), her session is eligible for 1.5 CEUs with the Yoga Alliance.

Additionally, you can download handouts at home that accompany the workshop.
